New Horizon Role Playing Game

New Horizon is a Science Fantasy roleplaying game (RPG). It's a world where different styles are mixed. For the RPG itself, New Horizon uses a simple but robust rule system named Volt. Games are easily played in the traditional way offering a lot of enjoyment.

Genre

Science Fantasy (also known as Sci-Fan Punk) is a genre that incorporates elements of science fiction, fantasy, utopian and dystopian fiction, and speculative fiction. It involves a futuristic setting where humanity's innovative achievements have been mixed together with elements reminiscent of the past. This imaginary setting is more or less plausible as a future setting, but like fantasy it has a certain magic to it. This can be subtle mysteries, or obvious magic and other supernatural phenomena, used as a primary element of plot, theme, or setting. The setting often mixes futuristic cities with a world that is wild or technologically stunted. Technology and nature are often seen struggling against one another, each protecting itself from the spread of the other. Works of Science Fantasy often feature advanced technologies and futuristic innovations including fictional machines interweaved with the primeval roughness of an untamed world.

How to play

To start a New Horizon role playing game, a group of people must be present. One of them should be the Game Master (GM). The GM should read the Game Master's Manual chapter carefully, to learn how to prepare an adventure, how to lead a group of people through the adventure, how to perform battles and how to calculate their outcome, and how to award players after completing the adventure. The GM should also read the Monster Manual to get familiar with the animals of New Horizon in order to be able to use them in the game. The GM should also read the Campaign Setting Guide to learn the history of the world and other details about the planet, its cities, factions, and people.

Each player should read the Player's Manual carefully, to learn how to fill out the Character Sheet correctly, how to calculate a player's statistics, how to select weapons, armor and equipment, and how to play.

Once all players and the GM are ready, the GM can select a suitable adventure from the book, or create one himself, and start guiding the players through it. The game uses one black and one white dice, and works like any other tabletop role-playing game (RPG).

Rule system

New Horizon is a tabletop RPG which uses an exciting new system called Volt. The Volt RP rules are explained in the Starter Guide, the Player's Manual/Guide and the Game Master's Manual/Guide. The Starter Guide is available for download below. By reading these guides you will learn how to apply the Volt rules for your adventures.

Why so much fighting?

At first glance it may seem that the Volt rule system is quite combat heavy. However, that is usually a misconception because while the rule system covers a lot of combat specific topics, it does not mean that an equal proportion of the adventures have to be about fighting - we've simply found that combat is more dependent on rules than the social interaction that is role-playing. Many adventures don't even have any combat at all and it's usually up to the GM to decide how much combat the adventure should contain.

Two D20 dice

Two D20 dice are required. We recommend one white and one black. If you don't have any dice to use, then use this Dice-web-page:

"I've downloaded/saved all of the starter/shortened .pdf files the site made available, and I've read all but the GM guide, and monster manual. I'm at a rather large dilemma... New Horizon is just too awesome for me to decide what I wanna play as!"

"The Medeans really call out to me, but I've been told by friends that I play too many characters like that, heh. The same is true with the Aesir and Vanir. I love them!"
